In a civil society, things do not always amount to a zero-sum, or as Ken has stated it, our admiration/admonition need not be "mutually exclusive". The quandary is not confined to historical figures, either. We can all enjoy a good movie or concert, and applaud those who produce and perform in them, even when we don't care so much for the decisions they make away from the work place. In the case of Lee, the equation is simply flipped. We should have no problem whatsoever in joyfully agreeing to disagree with detractors simply because we *know* better.

It is so easy to judge those who have lived centuries before using 21st century values. Lee, Washington, and Jefferson have all suffered from this. Yet all of these men remain American heroes. Two became presidents, great ones at that. Lee, a devoted servant of his country for most of his life, made the fateful decision to choose Virgina first, having first been offered command of the federal forces. For whatever reason he made this choice, once he did , the leadership which he showed while in command of the Army of Northern Virginia made him a enduring symbol of integrity, honor, duty and faith. When I was at W&L I acted at the student curator of the Lee Chapel. On many a cold January Sunday afternoon I was alone in the Chapel awaiting the occasional visitor. I could walk alone by the Recumbent Statue of Lee, look at the tattered battle flags and even on occasion sit in his chair. The thought of those afternoons today brings me the same sense of awe of the General as I felt then and I have tried to live my life as Lee did. Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. So it is only fitting that on his birthday, and on October 12th, his death day, we remember Lee for all that his did for his Country, his Commonwealth and his University.

Insightful reflection, thank you. We have often brought our children to campus for various events and used the visits as an opportunity to discuss the history and dignity of W&L and its namesakes. It has prompted several dinner table discussions with our son who is just beginning a study of American history in elementary school. I am reminded after these discussions that there is nothing in this world, not even a single drop of water, that has only two sides. It is precisely the sort of "three-dimensional" education provided at institutions like W&L that will serve to develop the strength of character needed in the next generation.
